The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 standard
Summary :
The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 allows for the control and certification of raw, intermediate and finished textile products at all stages of processing.
It is an independent system, certifying items such as sewing thread, dyed fabrics and knits, manufactured items like textile toys, terry cloth items, sheets…
-
Criteria
These controls for harmful substances take into account several criteria:
– Substances prohibited by law
– Substances regulated by law
– Chemicals that may be harmful to health
In general, these requirements go beyond current national laws, prioritizing prevention in health matters.
-
Laboratory tests and product classes
The tests carried out by OEKO-TEX depend on the actual use of the textile. The more the textile will be in contact with the skin, the stricter the requirements will be.
We can differentiate four classes of products:
– Class I:
Textile items for babies and children up to 3 years old (clothing, toys, sheets…)
– Class II:
Textiles in direct contact with the skin (underwear, sheets, t-shirts…)
– Class III:
Textiles in indirect contact with the skin (jackets, coats, etc.)
– Class IV:
Textile furnishing items (curtains, tablecloths, etc.)
-
Certification
For a textile product to be certified OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, all of its components must meet without exception the criteria mentioned above – except for the outer textile part such as sewing threads or prints, as well as non-textile accessories such as buttons or zippers.
