How to choose the right fabric?

Choosing the right fabric is important to ensure it meets your needs. With so many options like cotton, polyester, Tencel, and elastane, it's easy to get lost and not fully understand the advantages and disadvantages of each fabric, especially when it comes to workwear. Indeed, a cook, a medical professional, or a factory worker all need clothing and fabrics suited to their profession.

But how do you choose the right fabric? We'll detail the three main fabrics you'll find in our workwear.

  • Cotton

Cotton is a plant fiber that surrounds the seeds of cotton plants. Since the 19th century, and with the help of all the industrial advances that have shaped it, cotton has become the world's leading textile fiber, offering many advantages but also some drawbacks.

The advantages of cotton : it's a pleasant fabric to wear, soft, comfortable, and lightweight. It's easy to care for, can be washed at high temperatures, and has good absorbency.

The disadvantages of cotton : it has a high tendency to shrink, it wrinkles very easily, and it has poor colorfastness. Furthermore, its ability to retain heat is limited.

  • Polyester

Polyester fiber is obtained through a chemical process that involves assembling several small molecules to create larger, more spinnable molecules: polymers. Like cotton, polyester possesses several characteristics that make it a high-quality fabric.

The advantages of polyester : it has high tensile strength and abrasion resistance, good elasticity, it is wrinkle-resistant and very easy to care for. It also has good colorfastness.

The disadvantages of polyester : it absorbs very little moisture, its feel is quite rough and therefore not very comfortable, plus it retains grease.

  • Tencel

Tencel is produced solely from eucalyptus pulp, a tree that grows quickly with low water and pesticide requirements, making it far more environmentally friendly than other natural fibers like cotton. The material feels like a second skin and is therefore exceptionally comfortable to wear.

The advantages of Tencel : its fiber is five times more absorbent than organic cotton, it is a waterproof, virtually wrinkle-free, breathable, flexible and very soft fabric.

The disadvantages of polyester : it is a very thin fabric, it will not necessarily keep the body temperature warm and can be transparent.
