Halloween - The cold is coming

"Trick or treat!" Halloween is coming, and with it, autumn, the onset of cold weather, and the potential for new workplace accidents. It's therefore a good time to review what can happen and, of course, how to protect yourself.

Halloween, the cold, the ice:

It cannot be stressed enough that temperatures drop at this time of year, so it is important, if you do not want to get sick, to dress warmly; hats, long sleeves, thick pants or gloves will be your most faithful allies.

In addition, to avoid the risk of slipping, boots with strong grip on the ground can also be very useful, both to prevent a risk and to keep you warmer than a simple pair of so-called "classic" shoes.

The body regulates itself in response to the world around it.

The body's natural temperature is 37°C, but it regulates itself by retaining and producing heat from its reserves (food, physical activity, etc.). This allows it to stabilize its temperature at a certain level. If heat loss exceeds heat production, the body temperature drops, but fortunately, nature has provided a solution. Parts of the body more accustomed to being exposed to cold (for example, the hands if you don't wear gloves) are more resistant and have developed a greater resistance to cold.

Workplace accidents related to cold, and how to prepare for them

– As mentioned above, the floors become slippery, so appropriate footwear is the most important factor in preventing you from slipping.

– The difficulty in getting around, partly due to the previous point, but also during vehicle journeys, therefore requires extra caution during this period

– Regarding the metal surfaces we come into contact with, gloves will once again be your main allies in protecting your hands, but appropriate clothing (such as a protective coat) will also allow you greater freedom of movement while reducing risks.

– Physical strain and fatigue are increased during this cold period due to the increased energy expenditure the body makes to maintain a stable temperature. Furthermore, when exposed to the cold, it's important to remember to take more frequent breaks to recharge the body and avoid losing its vitality.

Cold weather is therefore an element to be taken into account in the performance of one's work in order to be sure of working in good conditions, while preserving one's health.

Quick reminder:

We would like to inform you that there are now shoes adapted to the cold and with a certain resistance to slipping.
Indeed, standards have been put in place in recent years. These standards (which shoes must meet to be classified as slip-resistant) are known as SRA, SRB, and SRC:

– The SRA standard certifies that the shoe is slip-resistant on a ceramic floor covered with water and detergent.
– The SRB standard certifies that the shoe is slip-resistant on a steel floor covered with glycerin.
– The SRC standard meets the requirements of both the SRA and SRB standards

SRC-certified footwear is ideal for workers in industry , transport and logistics activities , plumbers , and construction trades .

Finally, and this is especially for healthcare workers! Manelli has created a blouse specifically for Halloween. This very comfortable blouse features charming designs. It stands out from the "classic" clothing worn in the medical field.
